    Abstract:

The theme for the 2027 SWCA conference is oriented around finding opportunities to reflect on the past of writing center studies and to take the field in a plethora of new potential directions through RAD research methods. Curious about how to be chosen as a presenter or develop a strong presentation? Join us on Thursday, September 17th at 11:00am EST or 4:00pm EST (10am and 3pm CST) for a workshop, brainstorming session, and Q&A. During the workshop, we’ll discuss different presentation formats and provide tips for developing a strong proposal rooted in RAD research. We'll also cover non-empirical and narrative-based methodologies, as well as practice-based and programmatic approaches to writing center work; the 2027 conference welcomes all of these approaches. If you’re unfamiliar with RAD research methods, a first-time presenter, undergraduate or graduate student, or just interested in finding out what we’re looking for when we assess proposals, this is the workshop for you!

Dylan Maroney is the current associate director of community and research at Georgia State University’s Writing Studio. She is a 5th year Ph.D. candidate with a concentration in rhetoric and composition, and her research and teaching focuses primarily on literacy, digital writing, multimodal composition, and enlightenment rhetorics. She’s presented at conferences on pedagogy, composition, popular culture, and writing center administration. She is currently also acting as a guest editor for a RAD research special issue with SDC: A writing Center Journal.

Michael Parrish is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Literary Studies, specializing in Medieval English Literature, Medieval English Christianity, and Medievalism(s). He currently serves as the Writing Studio’s Associate Director of Technology and Finance. Beyond his work at GSU, he has presented his research on Medieval culture and literature, religion, and video gaming at numerous conferences. In addition to his academic work, Michael has experience contributing to the development of various AI models. He also has a background in business and project management.
